Description
The Church of St Mary is a church dating from around 1780. It is constructed of red-brown brick with lead and slate roofs. The church comprises a west tower, a three-bay nave and chancel combined, and a small, canted apse at the east end.
The west tower has a plinth and small, round-headed belfry openings constructed with gauged brick. The west wall features a larger, similar opening with timber geometrical tracery on the ground floor, below a pyramidal roof. The nave and chancel have a round-headed door consisting of six raised and fielded panels, set within a gauged brick arch. There are three round-headed windows with gauged brick arches; the west window is above the door, and the remaining two have sills raised to match in the 19th century. A stepped brick eaves cornice runs along the top of the walls, with raised, coped gables. The canted apse has a round-headed window with a sill on each side.
Attached to the east end of the church is a memorial dedicated to Anne, the wife of Robert Bray, who died in November 1761. The memorial includes the inscription: 'All those that comes our graves to se, / As we are now, so must you be.'
The interior features a late 18th-century hexagonal pulpit with a raised and fielded panel on each side, and a dentilled cornice.
