Description

This is a house dating to around 1840, located on Castle Hill in Lancaster. It was originally built as the residence of the prison governor. The house is constructed with white-painted scored render over sandstone rubble, with the sandstone visible on the sides. It has a slate roof and substantial gable chimneys. The building follows a double-depth plan, with two storeys above a cellar. The front elevation has three bays, characterised by a plinth, vestigial pilasters, and an eaves cornice with a plain frieze, all painted black. The windows have plain reveals and raised, nosing sills, with double-hung sashes incorporating margin lights. A doorway, accessed by three steps, features panelled timber pilasters, a lintel decorated with intersecting wavy bands, and a cornice protected by a lead flashing with scalloped edges. The door itself is made of timber with four raised and fielded panels, arranged as one, a pair, and one from top to bottom.
