Description

Town End Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating to 1672, as indicated by the initials "WEG" on the door lintel. It is constructed of rough sandstone rubble with a stone slate roof. The main facade faces west towards the garden. The original plan comprised two units, with a gabled entrance facing the road and a rear wing added slightly later. The farmhouse has two storeys and an attic, with a cellar located beneath the south end, accessed from ground level. All windows on the front facade have mullions with rebated and chamfered surrounds. A six-light window with a king mullion appears on both floors to the left. In the centre of the facade are two stair windows at an intermediate level: two lights below and one light above. At the right-hand end, there is a three-light and a two-light cellar window, both partly below ground. The ground floor has no windows, but a two-light window is present on the first floor. Both gables are coped with kneelers, and a chimney cap sits atop the south gable. The north gable features a doorway with moulded jambs that extend around a shaped lintel, topped with a hood mould. The rear wall reveals a chamfered cellar doorway to the south, with a three-light rebated and chamfered mullioned window to its right. Above this is a former four-light window, from which one mullion has been removed. To the right is a doorway accessed by a flight of stone steps. A four-light rebated and chamfered mullioned window is present on the first floor, alongside a blocked one-light window in the angle with the rear wing. On the ground floor of the south wall of the rear wing is a blocked one-light chamfered window, a three-light rebated and chamfered mullioned window, and a doorway with a reset battlemented lintel. The first-floor south wall features a three-light rebated and chamfered mullioned window to the left, and a two-light chamfered mullioned window to the right. The north wall of the wing, facing the road, is surfaced with pebbledash and contains sash windows in plain openings. Internally, a boxed bressumer remains, formerly supporting a lateral firehood against the rear wall of the 1672 range.
