Description

This is a terrace of five houses located on High Street, Lancaster, built around 1850. The houses are constructed from sandstone ashlar, with the rear walls built of squared rubble and covered by slate roofs. They are arranged with a double-depth plan, featuring doorways and staircases on the left side and chimney stacks on the right. Each house has three storeys above cellars. There is a single bay of windows to the right of each door, although number 1 also has windows above the door on the upper floors. The doorways have deep, plain reveals, a simple cornice, and 6-panel doors with overlights. The windows have plain reveals with sash windows; only those in number 9 retain their original 12 and 9 pane glazing. All other sashes, with the exception of those on the ground and first floors of number 7, and the second floors of numbers 5 and 7, have lost their glazing bars. The rear walls of numbers 5, 7, and 9 feature tall, rectangular stair windows. Number 1 was the birthplace in 1869 of Lawrence Binyon, the poet who penned “For the Fallen.”
