Description
This listing describes a pair of gate piers, steps, and a retaining wall located opposite the junction with Dallas Road in Lancaster. They date from the mid-18th century and were altered around 1866. These features are part of the terraced gardens of Nos 20 and 22 Castle Park. The gate piers are made of sandstone ashlar and coursed squared rubble. They are square in shape with pilasters on each face and have a prominent cornice. The eastern pier is topped with an urn on an intricately moulded base, while the urn on the western pier was removed around 1990. The gate piers are positioned at the top of a set of plain 19th-century steps and at the bottom of a flight of 15 mid-18th-century steps that have nosings. The retaining walls are battered and watershot, standing approximately 4 meters high, and extend about 20 meters to the west and 15 meters to the east from the bottom of the steps. Historically, Meeting House Lane was widened in 1866 to accommodate increased traffic from the railway station, resulting in the wall being rebuilt about 5 meters north of its original position.
