Description

Hilston House is a house, now operating as an old people's home, dating from circa 1880. It is constructed of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The house is five bays wide by four bays deep, with an asymmetrical design across two storeys plus an attic. It is built in a Free Italianate style. Features include a stone plinth, moulded bands, rusticated quoins, a blocking course, and a projecting modillion eaves cornice. The first bay projects and incorporates a ground-floor bay window with three-light segmental-headed sash windows, topped with a keystone. Above this are three semicircular-headed windows to the first floor, and two to the attic, which itself has an open pedimented gable. Bays two and three contain a total of four two-light segmental-headed windows with lugged architraves. The entrance porch, located in bays four and five, features three pairs of Tuscan pilasters, an entablature, a baluster parapet and two semicircular openings (one now blocked) with fluted keystones. A porch has been added to the left-hand opening, above which are two semicircular-headed windows and a projecting pediment. Other elevations display a variety of pediments, oriel windows, bay windows, and a balcony featuring good cast ironwork.
