Description
These are four houses located in South Turton, near Harwood. They date primarily to 1795, as indicated by a datestone reading "GEORGE AND RACHEL HEATON 1795", though the initial two bays may be older. The houses are constructed of dressed stone with stone slate and concrete tile roofs. They are arranged over two storeys and five bays, with the final two bays being lower in height. Quoins are visible on the left gable end. Most windows are 20th-century casements, but the second bay features a round-headed window with a simple surround, impost, and key at the first-floor level. The first two bays have a three-light flat-mullioned window, with an inserted casement window at the end of that bay. The datestone is set within the architrave of the second bay’s window. The entrances are plain, with gabled 20th-century porches on the houses numbered 85 and 87. The first three bays have a concrete tile roof, while a gable-end stack is present on the third bay, and two cross-axial stacks are situated along the front of the ridge to the end bays. The rear elevation features casement windows, with a later addition featuring a flat-mullioned window that extends the full length of the ground floor, containing sixteen lights, although one light has been blocked and six mullions are missing. The ground floor was likely used by a textile manufacturer.
