Description

A terrace of ten cottages, built around 1848 by John Cunningham as part of the original layout for the Grand Junction Railway Company, designed by Engineer Joseph Locke. The cottages are constructed of brown brick with slate roofs, standing two storeys high with a stone plinth. Each pair of cottages is arranged with side-by-side entrance doors beneath a single lintel. Later additions include multi-panelled replacement doors and slate-roofed canopies, supported by shaped timber brackets. The windows are two-light horizontal sliding sashes with glazing bars, stone sills, and flat, chamfered arches at ground and first floor levels. Centrally over each pair of front doors, at first floor level, there is a blank window. At the rear, there are framed, ledged and battened doors and horizontally sliding sashes. The end gables have shaped barge boards. The terrace features four flue party wall stacks and blue tile ridges. The cottages were originally part of a larger development, which included Nos.2 to 20 (even) Betley Street, Nos.1 to 19 (odd) and Nos.2 to 20 (even) Dorfold Street, and Nos.1 to 9 (consecutive) Tollitt Street.
