Description

The Lodge is a house, now partly used as a dentist’s surgery, dating from the early 19th century, although incorporating an 18th-century core, with a mid-19th century extension. It is constructed of brick with a graded slate roof. The building is two storeys high and originally had a four-window front, extended by one bay to the right in matching style. A central doorway is sheltered by a timber porch with chamfered posts supporting an entablature. The sash windows have flat-arched brick surrounds and are painted. A shallow full-height bow is situated in the gable return to the north, featuring a tripartite window on the ground floor which functions as French doors, with a canopy supported by cast-iron columns above. A rear wing may be from an earlier build and has three-light iron casement windows on both floors. A tall stair window with iron glazing bars is visible on the inner elevation. Axial stacks are present on both the main range and the wing. The interior was not inspected.

Local climate

The Lodge sits in a wetter-than-average part of the UK, with an average of 1,000 mm of rain a year. This makes it wetter than 80% of listed buildings in the UK. Its exposure to wind-driven rain is greater than that of 59% of listed buildings.

It experiences an average of 40 freeze-thaw cycles a year, more than 78% of listed buildings. Of these, 22 follow at least 1 mm of rain in the preceding 48 hours. Average temperatures at this location have risen by 0.3°C per decade since 1991.

Averages for 1991–2020; temperature trend 1991–2025. Figures describe the wider area (a grid cell of roughly 10 km), not the individual site. Contains modified Copernicus Climate Change Service information 2026.
