Description
This Methodist chapel, built around 1890 to 1900, is accompanied by adjoining church rooms, with subsequent alterations made in the 1970s. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with ashlar dressings to the entrances, windows, pinnacles, and tower, all topped with slate roofs. It is designed in the Gothic Revival style, incorporating Decorated tracery and Art Nouveau glass.
The west facade, which serves as the main entrance, features end pilaster strips topped by pinnacles. The central entrance is set between short, offset pilaster buttresses with replacement glazed doors, a lunette and tracery above in a pointed arch with roll, hollow, and double roll moulding, and a hoodmould. Flanking the entrance are single-light windows with smaller lights above. A large seven-light window above the entrance has a cambered arch, a hoodmould with label head stops, chamfered jambs, and foliate decoration at the apex. The squat tower has offset buttresses to its lower stage, a two-cusped-light window, a chamfered band, a single light with smaller lights to the head, a lancet window at the angle, and an octagonal belfry stage with slender buttresses and louvred openings, along with blind tracery over. The octagonal spire rises above the belfry.
The nave has stepped, three-cusped-light mullioned windows to the upper stage and three-light, straight-headed windows with curved transoms to the lower stage. Similar four-light windows are present in the transepts. All windows are set in chamfered surrounds with continuous hoodmoulds to the lower-stage windows.
The church rooms have projecting end bays; a square turret rises above the left bay, and the second and sixth bays are canted to full height. The fourth bay features a gable. The windows are mainly three-light mullioned, with a five-cusped-light upper window in the fourth bay. A part-glazed porch with double doors provides access to the fourth bay. The roof includes low parapets and a lantern with a spire.
Inside the chapel, the windows feature stained glass depicting Art Nouveau-style flowers and foliage. A balcony runs along three sides, encompassing the aisles and the west end. A pointed arch arcade, supported by cast-iron columns with foliate capitals in two stages, separates the nave from the aisles, with a balcony between the stages. The upper balcony has foliate capitals surmounted by octagonal pendant bosses. The aisles have an elaborate roof structure with individual angled roofs to each bay. The nave itself features a barrel vaulted roof with ribs. Original fixed pews remain throughout the chapel. The church rooms retain some original joinery and glass.
