Description
This structure is a wall attached to the north-west of No.57 on Barclay Street in Sunderland. It dates from the early 19th century, with later alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The wall is made of rubble limestone, featuring ashlar quoins and coping, and connects to the stables and offices of No.58, which have been converted into a garage and house.
The building on the left has a Welsh slate roof, while the rear house has a composition tile roof. The north elevation facing Barclay Street consists of a one-storey, one-bay rubble building with a high wall attached. This part is now used as a garage and has a 20th-century metal garage door, along with a sliding vehicle door in the yard wall. Adjacent to No.58, there are a pair of tall square ashlar gate piers with top bands and low pyramidal coping, leading to boarded gates.
The hipped Welsh slate roof extends from the left building. The house at the back of the yard is three storeys high with four windows, featuring a wide segmental-arched vehicle entrance on the left, although some details are obscured by render. The first-floor windows have been renewed with flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills, and there are blind panels above that likely were once second-floor windows. The rear elevation facing Cross Rendlesham Street is made of rubble with eroded floor bands, consistent with No.58, and has irregular fenestration with projecting stone sills on the renewed windows.
