Description
The entrance lodge to Hebburn Cemetery was built in 1890 by Frederick West of Hebburn for the Hedworth, Monkton and Jarrow Burial Board. It is constructed from snecked sandstone with ashlar quoins and a plinth, topped with a roof of Welsh slate. The building has an L-shaped plan with an entrance porch at the angle.
The main elevation facing the street features two storeys and three bays, with the third bay being cross-gabled. On the ground floor, there is a sash window, and the porch has a moulded parapet that contains a boarded door with an elliptical-headed fanlight in a moulded surround. Additionally, there is a three-light mullioned and transomed window in the gabled bay.
On the first floor, a sash window is partly set in a gabled dormer, and there is a double sash window in the gable facing the street. All windows have chamfered surrounds. The high-pitched roof is adorned with bands of fishscale slates, and all gables feature barge boards with finials. There are also two tall stone chimneys with cornices, located at the rear and on the end return, the latter being buttressed. This lodge is included for its group value.
