Description
Thomas Bewick's birthplace at Cherryburn is a former cottage and attached byre, now used as a hay store and stable. The cottage dates from the 18th century, while the byre is from the 19th century. It is constructed of whitewashed stone and has a Welsh slate roof. The single-storey cottage on the right features two plank doors in the center, a small four-pane window to the left, and a half-slatted window to the right. A sundial is set into the wall to the left of the door, and there is an upper door to the hay loft on the right side. The two-storey byre to the left has a plank door on the right with a pitching door above and a hit-and-miss window to the left. Both buildings have gabled roofs, with the cottage having a much steeper pitch and flat coping on the left gable. This site is historically significant as the birthplace of Thomas Bewick in 1753, which is noted on a 20th-century plate above the cottage door.
