Description
The building is a disused railway station, constructed in 1887 by Bell of York for the North-Eastern Railway. It is built of rock-faced snecked stone with a Welsh slate roof, and features a cast-iron canopy. The station is an island design, with platforms on both sides of the building.
The single-storey building extends over 11 bays. The 1st and 11th bays contain 4-panel doors with small-pane overlights; the 6th bay serves as a walkway connecting the platforms. There are 2-light mullioned windows, now boarded up.
A cast-iron canopy, formerly with a glass roof, surrounds the whole building. The canopy is cantilevered and supported by large brackets and elaborately-patterned spandrels, as well as decorative bargeboards. The building has a gabled roof with three ridge stacks.
