Description
The Spittal War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure commemorating the local men and women who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. It was unveiled in July 1921 by Brigadier R W Riddell.
Constructed from granite, the memorial features bronze plaques mounted on exposed concrete foundations. The design includes an obelisk supported by a pedestal with a dentilled cornice and a three-stepped base. On the northeast face of the memorial, there are three bronze plaques with inscriptions in relief. The upper plaque on the obelisk reads "TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD." The central plaque on the pedestal honors "SPITTAL MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919" and lists 37 names in alphabetical and rank order. The lower plaque on the base commemorates "THE MEN AND WOMEN OF SPITTAL WHO FELL IN THE 1939-1945 WAR."
Originally, the memorial was surrounded by low metal railings. It holds significant cultural and historical value, reflecting the impact of world events on the local community and contributing to the character of the street scene.
