Description

Thornton House is a late 18th-century house located in Hart Burn Thornton. It is constructed of squared and tooled stone with a slate roof. The main block is joined to a two-story, L-shaped servants’ wing on the east side. The front elevation has three bays and three stories, arranged symmetrically, with a plinth. Late 19th-century sash windows are set within original openings. The gables are coped, with stepped end stacks. A two-story, two-bay wing is set back to the right, featuring similar fenestration, a coped gable, and a stone end stack. A small, projecting porch is located on the left return, incorporating a flush-panelled door, a Gothick window, and a hipped roof, topped with a pedimented gable end. The rear elevation has similar window placement to the front. Inside, there is an open-well staircase with stick balusters and a swept grip handrail.
