Description
The monument to H.W.F. Bolckow, dated 1881, was created by sculptor D.W. Stevenson and founder Sir John Steell from Edinburgh. It features a red granite pedestal topped with a signed bronze figure of a standing man in a frock coat, holding the Charter of Incorporation of Middlesbrough. The monument has two chamfered steps beneath the pedestal. The north-west face of the die and plinth is inscribed with 'H.W.F. BOLCKOW' and 'ERECTED 1881'. A bronze tablet on the south-east face of the die bears raised lettering stating, 'THIS STATUE WAS UNVEILED BY LORD FREDERICK CAVENDISH, ON THE 6TH OCTOBER, 1881'. Initially placed outside the Middlesbrough Royal Exchange on Marton Road, it was relocated to Albert Park in 1925 and moved to its current site at the Royal Exchange in 1986. H.W.F. Bolckow was a co-founder of Middlesbrough's iron industry in 1840.
