Description

No. 4 Leading Light is a navigation beacon located on the foreshore near Rampside Hall, built around 1875. It is constructed from red and yellow brick and features a slender, square tower that stands approximately 20 meters tall. The design includes clasping red brick pilaster strips and yellow brick side panels, which are reinforced with iron straps extending from a concrete foundation. The structure has an iron access door and small slit windows. Beneath the yellow brick lantern housing, there is corbelled brickwork, also secured with iron strapping, and rectangular panels on each side. The tower culminates in a brick, pyramidal roof with additional corbelling. Similar leading lights were previously constructed on Foulney Island and off Carr Lane, Walney Island, both of which have since been demolished. The alignment of these lights was crucial for guiding vessels approaching Barrow-in-Furness.
